Birmingham City is one of the city of Jefferson and Shelby counties, Alabama, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 242820 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 228798, It is Alabama's largest by population . Its area is just over 151.95 sq mi (393.55 kmē), of which, 149.92 square miles (388.29 kmē) of it is land and 2.04 square miles (5.28 kmē) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is ranks 13 in the size of its inland waterways in Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 242820 residents, 98782 households, and 59287 families in the city. The population density was 1619.7 people per square mile (625.37/kmē), it is Alabama's 15th most densely populated city. There were 111927 housing units at an average density of 746.6 per square mile (288.26/kmē). The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.09. In the Birmingham City, 25% of the population was under the age of 18, 11.1% were 18 to 24, 30% were 25 to 44, 20.4% were 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older.
