According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1153.4 sq mi (2987.29 sq km), of which, 1151.41 square miles (2982.14 sq km) of it is land and 1.99 square miles (5.15 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 28th largest by total area in North Dakota.
