Big Timber City, Sweet Grass County, Montana is a city located in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. It is home to over 1650 people (2000 census). Its population was estimated at 1796 in July 2008, It is the 63rd largest by population in the U.S. state of Montana. The city has a total area of 0.97 mi˛ (2.51 sq km), of which, 0.94 square miles (2.43 sq km) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 sq km) of it is water, making it Montana's 181st largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1650 people in the city, organized into 711 households, and 430 families residing in the city. The population density was 1752.6 people per square mile (676.68/km˛), making it the 41st most densely populated city in Montana. There were 812 housing units at an average density of 863.8 per square mile (333.52/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.24 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 108.8 females. The median age was 42.4 years, The median age of males was 39.4 years, for females the median age was 45.2 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 1594 White, Black or African American, 13 American Indian, 5 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, 25 from two or more races and 12 Ohter races.
