Big Stone County, Minnesota is a county located in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 5820. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 5365, It is the sixth smallest in terms of population. The county has a total area of 527.88 square miles (1367.2 kmē), of which, 496.95 square miles (1287.09 kmē) of it is land and 30.93 square miles (80.11 kmē) of it is water, it is the 21st smallest by area in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5820 residents, 2377 households, and 1611 families in the county. The population density was 11.7 people per square mile (4.52/kmē), making its Minnesota's 17th least densely populated county. There were 3171 housing units at an average density of 6.4 per square mile (2.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.38 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the county Age distribution was 24.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 24% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 5365, The racial makeup of the county was 5268 White, 22 Black or African American, 32 American Indian, 24 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 19 from two or more races.
