Bethel Census Area is a United States census area located in the United States of Alaska. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Bethel Census Area is home to 16006 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 17236, making it Alaska's sixth largest census area. It is spread over 45508.46 square miles (117866.37 square kilometre), of which, 40633.31 square miles (105239.79 square kilometre ) of it is land and 4875.15 square miles (12626.58 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the third largest by size in Alaska. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Alaska.


As of the census of 2000, there were 16006 people in the census area, organized into 4226 households, and 3175 families residing in the census area. The population density was 0.4 people per square mile (0.15/kmē), it is 18th most densely populated census area in Alaska. There were 5188 housing units at an average density of 0.1 per square mile (0.04/kmē). The average household size was 3.73 persons, and the average family size was 4.41 persons. In the census area the population was spread out, with 39.8% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 88.3 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 88.7 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the census area is 17236, The racial makeup of the census area was 13.39% White, 1.15% Black or African American, 80.57% American Indian, 1.29% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 3.53% from two or more races.

The median income for a family in the county was $36250, it is Alaska's third poorest census area by median family income. The per capita income for the county was $12603, it is Alaska's second poorest census area by per capita income.

In 2000, 5584 pupils and students, of which 2904 are male and 2680 are female, 34.89% of the total population, are in the education system. Of which, total enrollment of student are in, 395 nursery or pri school, 384 kindergarten, 3152 elementary school, 1278 high school and 375 College graduate school.
