The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 19337, It is the 18th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The county encompasses an area of 741.22 sq mi (1919.75 square kilometre ), of which, 699.19 square miles (1810.89 square kilometre) of it is land and 42.03 square miles (108.86 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 18th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

The population density was 28.3 people per square mile (10.93/kmē), giving it the sixth least densely populated county among the North Carolina. There were 9050 housing units at an average density of 12.9 per square mile (4.98/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82 males.
