Berks County is one of the 67 county of Pennsylvania, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 373638 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 403595, It is ninth most populous county in Pennsylvania. It covers total area of 865.67 sq mi (2242.08 sq km), of which, 858.88 square miles (2224.49 sq km) of it is land and 6.79 square miles (17.59 sq km) of it is water, making it the 19th largest by size in Pennsylvania.

As of the census of 2000, there were 373638 people, 141570 households, and 98463 families living in the county. The population density was 435 people per square mile (167.95/kmē), giving it the 12th most densely populated county among the Pennsylvania. There were 150222 housing units at an average density of 174.9 per square mile (67.53/kmē). The average household size was 2.55 people, and the average family size was 3.05 people. In the county Age distribution was 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 403595, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 91.99% White, 5.17% Black or African American, 0.28% American Indian, 1.33% Asian, 0.09% Native Hawaiian, and 1.14% from two or more races.
