Berkeley County is a county located in the United States of South Carolina. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 142651 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 169327, It is South Carolina's ninth most populous county. The county spans an area of 1228.07 square miles (3180.69 sq km), of which, 1097.72 square miles (2843.08 sq km) of it is land and 130.35 square miles (337.6 sq km) of it is water, making it the third largest by size in South Carolina. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in South Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 142651 residents, 49922 households, and 37696 families in the county. The population density was 130 people per square mile (50.19/kmē), it is the 17th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 54717 housing units at an average density of 49.8 per square mile (19.23/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.75 persons, and the average family size was 3.15 persons. In the county Age distribution was 28% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 96.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 97.9 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 169327, The racial makeup of the county was 117030 White, 44905 Black or African American, 886 American Indian, 3539 Asian, 147 Native Hawaiian, and 2820 from two or more races.
