Benzie County is one of the 83 county of Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 15998 as per the Census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 17396, It is the 19th least populous county in the U.S. state of Michigan. The county has a total area of 859.64 sq mi (2226.46 kmē), of which, 321.31 square miles (832.19 kmē) of it is land and 538.32 square miles (1394.24 kmē) of it is water, making it Michigan's 37th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15998 people in the county, organized into 6500 households, and 4593 families living in the county. The population density was 49.8 people per square mile (19.23/kmē), making its Michigan's 49th most densely populated county. There were 10312 housing units at an average density of 32.1 per square mile (12.39/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 people, and the average family size was 2.86 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 23.4% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.4 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17396, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.05% White, 0.78% Black or African American, 1.7% American Indian, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.33% from two or more races.
