Benton County, Tennessee is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 16537 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 16193, It is the 21st smallest in terms of population. Its area is just over 436.2 sq mi (1129.75 square kilometre), of which, 394.84 square miles (1022.63 square kilometre) of it is land and 41.37 square miles (107.15 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 51st largest by total area in Tennessee. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16537 people in the county, organized into 6863 households, and 4888 families residing in the county. The population density was 41.9 people per square mile (16.18/kmē), it is the 22nd least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. There were 8595 housing units at an average density of 21.8 per square mile (8.42/kmē). The average household size was 2.37 persons, and the average family size was 2.82 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 22% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 27% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 16193, The racial makeup of the county was 15583 White, 372 Black or African American, 61 American Indian, 50 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 127 from two or more races.
