Belleville City is a city located in St. Clair County, Illinois, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 41410 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 41097, It is the 36th largest by population in the U.S. state of Illinois. The city extends throughout a territory of 18.98 mi˛ (49.16 sq km ), of which, 18.85 square miles (48.82 sq km) of it is land and 0.13 square miles (0.34 sq km) of it is water, it is the 19th largest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 41410 people, 17603 households, and 10415 families living in the city. The population density was 2196.4 people per square mile (848.03/km˛), making it the 254th most densely populated city in Illinois. There were 19142 housing units at an average density of 1015.5 per square mile (392.09/km˛). The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.95. The population's age distribution was 23.4% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85 males. The median age is 37.2 years, The median age of males was 35.2 years, for females the median age was 39.1 years. The racial makeup of the city was 33754 White, 6421 Black or African American, 108 American Indian, 336 Asian, 28 Native Hawaiian, 592 from two or more races and 171 Ohter races.
