Bell County is a county located in Texas, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 237974. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 285084, It is the 17th most populous county in the U.S. state of Texas. It is spread over 1087.93 sq mi (2817.73 square kilometre), of which, 1059.72 square miles (2744.66 square kilometre ) of it is land and 28.21 square miles (73.06 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 58th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 237974 people, 85507 households, and 61971 families residing in the county. The population density was 224.6 people per square mile (86.72/kmē), it is the 21st most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Texas. There were 92782 housing units at an average density of 87.6 per square mile (33.82/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.68 persons, and the average family size was 3.14 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 28.9% under the age of 18, 13.4% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 17% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 285084, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 200782 White, 61425 Black or African American, 3037 American Indian, 8303 Asian, 1568 Native Hawaiian, and 9969 from two or more races.
