Bedford County is a county located in Tennessee, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 37586 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 44696, making it the 34th most populous county in Tennessee. It is spread over 474.83 square miles (1229.8 sq km), of which, 473.67 square miles (1226.8 sq km ) of it is land and 1.17 square miles (3.03 sq km) of it is water, it is the 46th largest by area in the U.S. state of Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 37586 residents, 13905 households, and 10350 families in the county. The population density was 79.4 people per square mile (30.66/kmē), making it the 38th most densely populated county in Tennessee. There were 14990 housing units at an average density of 31.6 per square mile (12.2/kmē). The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.06. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.8% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 101.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103.1 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 44696, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 90.03% White, 7.69% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 0.78% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.03% from two or more races.
