Bedford City is a one of the independent city from Virginia's 135 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The independent city has a population of 6299 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6312, It is the eighth least populous independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is spread over 6.9 square miles (17.87 kmē), of which, 6.89 square miles (17.85 kmē ) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 kmē) of it is water, it is the eighth smallest in terms of geographical size.


As of the census of 2000, there were 6299 people, 2519 households, and 1593 families living in the independent city. The population density was 914.5 people per square mile (353.09/kmē), it is the 37th most densely populated independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 2702 housing units at an average density of 392.3 per square mile (151.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.26 persons, and the average family size was 2.87 persons. In the Bedford City, 21.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.2% were 18 to 24, 27.8% were 25 to 44, 20.7% were 45 to 64, and 22.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.
