Beaufort County is a county located in the United States of North Carolina. As of 2000 the population was 44958. The July 2008 population estimate is 46035, It is 54th most populous county in North Carolina. It has total area of 958.69 sq mi (2483 sq km), of which, 827.97 square miles (2144.43 sq km) of it is land and 130.72 square miles (338.56 sq km) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in North Carolina.

The population density was 54.3 people per square mile (20.97/kmē), it is North Carolina's 21st least densely populated county. There were 22139 housing units at an average density of 26.7 per square mile (10.31/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.89. In the Beaufort County, 23.4% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.7% were 18 to 24, 26.1% were 25 to 44, 26.9% were 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.5 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 46035, The racial makeup of the county was 32897 White, 12543 Black or African American, 115 American Indian, 146 Asian, 11 Native Hawaiian, and 323 from two or more races.
