Its population was estimated at 8052 in July 2008, making it the 40th most populous in Mississippi. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.86 mi˛ (43.67 sq km), of which, 6.12 square miles (15.85 sq km) of it is land and 10.74 square miles (27.82 sq km) of it is water, making it Mississippi's 28th largest by total area. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Mississippi.
