Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 33874, making it the 39th most populous in Michigan. The city has a total area of 11.33 sq mi (29.34 kmē), of which, 10.41 square miles (26.96 kmē) of it is land and 0.92 square miles (2.38 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 58th largest by total area among Michigan.
