Baxter City is one of the city of Crow Wing County, Minnesota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The city has a population of 5555 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 8271, making it Minnesota's 119th largest. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.67 mi˛ (50.95 square kilometre), of which, 17.32 square miles (44.86 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.35 square miles (6.09 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 62nd largest by size in Minnesota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5555 residents, 1921 households, and 1586 families in the city. The population density was 320.7 people per square mile (123.82/km˛), making its Minnesota's 261st least densely populated city. There were 1979 housing units at an average density of 114.3 per square mile (44.13/km˛). The average household size was 2.87 persons, and the average family size was 3.17 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 31.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males. The median age is 35.6 years, the median age of male residents at 34.8 and the median age of female residents at 36.3. The racial makeup of the city was 5479 White, 1 Black or African American, 12 American Indian, 23 Asian, Native Hawaiian, 35 from two or more races and 5 Ohter races.
