Bates County, Missouri is a county located in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. It is home to over 16653 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17075, It is 64th most populous county in Missouri. The county comprises an area of 851.37 mi˛ (2205.04 square kilometre), of which, 848.47 square miles (2197.53 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.9 square miles (7.51 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the sixth largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 19.6 people per square mile (7.57/km˛), making it the 31st least densely populated county in Missouri. There were 7247 housing units at an average density of 8.5 per square mile (3.28/km˛). The average household size was 2.51 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17075, The racial makeup of the county was 96.9% White, 1.01% Black or African American, 0.71% American Indian, 0.19% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.18% from two or more races.
