As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 57733 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 73491, making it the 48th most populous county in Texas. The county has a total area of 895.92 miē (2320.42 kmē), of which, 888.35 square miles (2300.82 kmē) of it is land and 7.57 square miles (19.61 kmē) of it is water, it is the 81st smallest by area in the U.S. state of Texas.
