Barton County is one of the 115 county of Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 12541 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12531, making it Missouri's 37th smallest county. The county extends throughout a territory of 596.72 sq mi (1545.5 sq km ), of which, 594.25 square miles (1539.1 sq km) of it is land and 2.47 square miles (6.4 sq km) of it is water, making it the 57th largest by size in Missouri.

In the county Age distribution was 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12531, The racial makeup of the county was 96.58% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 0.95% American Indian, 0.36% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, and 1.59% from two or more races.
