In July 2008, its estimated population was 47501, making it the 12th most populous in Tennessee. It covers total area of 19.09 sq mi (49.44 sq km), of which, 19.08 square miles (49.42 sq km) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 34th largest by total area among Tennessee.
