Barren County is a county located in Kentucky, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 38033 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 41566, making it the 25th most populous county in Kentucky. The county comprises an area of 499.93 sq mi (1294.81 square kilometre), of which, 490.97 square miles (1271.61 square kilometre) of it is land and 8.96 square miles (23.21 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 12th largest by size in Kentucky.

As of the census of 2000, there were 38033 residents, 15346 households, and 10939 families in the county. The population density was 77.5 people per square mile (29.92/kmē), it is 46th most densely populated county in Kentucky. There were 17095 housing units at an average density of 34.8 per square mile (13.44/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 112 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 41566, The racial makeup of the county was 94.37% White, 4.04% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.61% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.75% from two or more races.
