Barnwell County is a county located in South Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 23478 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 22872, It is the ninth smallest in terms of population. Its area is just over 557.25 square miles (1443.27 sq km), of which, 548.41 square miles (1420.38 sq km) of it is land and 8.84 square miles (22.9 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 30th largest by total area among South Carolina's county.

In the county Age distribution was 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 22872, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 54.41% White, 43.63% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 0.65% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
