Barnstable County is a United States county located in the United States of Massachusetts. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 222230 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 221049, It is the ninth most populous county in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The county comprises an area of 1305.62 square miles (3381.54 sq km), of which, 395.51 square miles (1024.37 sq km) of it is land and 910.1 square miles (2357.15 sq km) of it is water, giving it the second largest by total area among Massachusetts's county. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Massachusetts.

As of the census of 2000, there were 222230 people, 94822 households, and 61041 families living in the county. The population density was 561.9 people per square mile (216.95/kmē), it would be the eighth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. There were 147083 housing units at an average density of 371.9 per square mile (143.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.28 people, and the average family size was 2.82 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 20.4% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 111.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 116.2 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 221049, The racial makeup of the county was 94.92% White, 2.23% Black or African American, 0.63% American Indian, 0.98% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.21% from two or more races.
