Barnes County is one of the 53 county of North Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 11775. The July 2008 population estimate is 10682, It is the 13th largest county by population in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The county spans an area of 1513.23 mi˛ (3919.25 sq km), of which, 1491.65 square miles (3863.36 sq km) of it is land and 21.58 square miles (55.89 sq km) of it is water, it is the 15th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Dakota.

The population density was 7.9 people per square mile (3.05/km˛), giving it the 15th most densely populated county among the North Dakota. There were 5599 housing units at an average density of 3.8 per square mile (1.47/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.29 persons, and the average family size was 2.89 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 23% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males. Its population was estimated at 10682 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 10396 White, 79 Black or African American, 109 American Indian, 26 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 72 from two or more races.
