Bamberg County is one of the 46 county of South Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 16658 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 15307, It is the fourth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of South Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 395.47 square miles (1024.26 sq km), of which, 393.25 square miles (1018.51 sq km) of it is land and 2.22 square miles (5.75 sq km) of it is water, it is the third smallest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16658 people, 6123 households, and 4253 families living in the county. The population density was 42.4 people per square mile (16.37/kmē), it is the tenth least populated county in terms of population density. There were 7130 housing units at an average density of 18.1 per square mile (6.99/kmē). The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.1. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 12.9% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84 males. Its population was estimated at 15307 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 37.23% White, 61.8% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.2% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.58% from two or more races.
