Ballard County is a county in the United States of Kentucky. Ballard County had an official population of 8286 in 2000. In July 2008, its estimated population was 8323, It is 14th least populous county in Kentucky. The county has a total area of 273.6 miē (708.62 kmē), of which, 251.16 square miles (650.5 kmē) of it is land and 22.44 square miles (58.12 kmē) of it is water, it is the 78th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Kentucky.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 8286 people, 3395 households, and 2415 families living in the county. The population density was 33 people per square mile (12.74/kmē), it is Kentucky's 19th least densely populated county. There were 3837 housing units at an average density of 15.3 per square mile (5.91/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.85 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.1% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 8323, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7873 White, 293 Black or African American, 9 American Indian, 22 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 124 from two or more races.
