Avery County is a county in the United States of North Carolina. It is home to over 17167 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 17884, making it the 15th least populous county in North Carolina. Its area is just over 247.21 sq mi (640.27 sq km), of which, 247 square miles (639.73 sq km) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 sq km) of it is water, it is the sixth smallest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

The population's age distribution was 19.4% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 111.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 112.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 17884, The racial makeup of the county was 93.37% White, 5.24% Black or African American, 0.39% American Indian, 0.25% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.7% from two or more races.
