Augusta County, Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 65615 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 71250, It is 26th most populous county in Virginia. The county comprises an area of 970.93 mi˛ (2514.7 sq km), of which, 970.36 square miles (2513.22 sq km) of it is land and 0.57 square miles (1.48 sq km) of it is water, making it Virginia's third largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 65615 people, 24818 households, and 18903 families residing in the county. The population density was 67.6 people per square mile (26.1/km˛), it is the 85th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 26738 housing units at an average density of 27.6 per square mile (10.66/km˛). The average household size was 2.56 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.8 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 71250, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 67244 White, 3006 Black or African American, 115 American Indian, 272 Asian, 19 Native Hawaiian, and 594 from two or more races.
