Athens Village is a city located in Greene County, New York, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 1695. Its population was estimated at 1694 in July 2008, making it New York's 653rd largest. The city encompasses an area of 4.6 square miles (11.91 square kilometre ), of which, 3.37 square miles (8.73 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.23 square miles (3.19 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 230th largest by area in the U.S. state of New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1695 residents, 687 households, and 451 families in the city. The population density was 503 people per square mile (194.21/kmē), making it the 171st least densely populated city in New York. There were 793 housing units at an average density of 235.3 per square mile (90.85/kmē). The average household size was 2.44 people, and the average family size was 3.01 people. In the city Population was distributed with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85 males. The racial makeup of the city was 1618 White, 18 Black or African American, 4 American Indian, 12 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, 25 from two or more races and 16 Ohter races.
