Atchison County is a one of the county from Missouri's 115 counties and independent city, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 6430 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 6031, It is ninth least populous county in Missouri. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 547.36 square miles (1417.66 sq km), of which, 544.72 square miles (1410.82 sq km) of it is land and 2.64 square miles (6.84 sq km) of it is water, making it the 68th largest by size in Missouri.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 6430 people, 2722 households, and 1778 families residing in the county. The population density was 11.8 people per square mile (4.56/kmē), making it the 12th least densely populated county in Missouri. There were 3103 housing units at an average density of 5.7 per square mile (2.2/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.25 persons, and the average family size was 2.82 persons. In the county Age distribution was 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 6031, The racial makeup of the county was 5843 White, 134 Black or African American, 16 American Indian, 16 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 22 from two or more races.
