Atchison County is a county in the United States of Kansas. The population of the county was 16774 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 16481, It is the 31st largest county by population in the U.S. state of Kansas. The county extends throughout a territory of 435.04 miē (1126.75 kmē ), of which, 432.34 square miles (1119.76 kmē) of it is land and 2.7 square miles (6.99 kmē) of it is water, it is the fourth smallest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16774 people, 6275 households, and 4278 families residing in the county. The population density was 38.8 people per square mile (14.98/kmē), making its Kansas's 18th most densely populated county. There were 6818 housing units at an average density of 15.8 per square mile (6.1/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 16481, The racial makeup of the county was 15007 White, 986 Black or African American, 106 American Indian, 55 Asian, 12 Native Hawaiian, and 315 from two or more races.
