Ashland County is a county located in the United States of Wisconsin. The county has a population of 16866 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 16295, It is Wisconsin's 13th least populous county. The county spans an area of 2293.73 sq mi (5940.73 sq km), of which, 1043.82 square miles (2703.48 sq km) of it is land and 1249.91 square miles (3237.25 sq km) of it is water, giving it the second largest by total area among Wisconsin's county. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Wisconsin.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16866 people in the county, organized into 6718 households, and 4281 families living in the county. The population density was 16.2 people per square mile (6.25/kmē), it is the eighth least populated county in terms of population density. There were 8883 housing units at an average density of 8.5 per square mile (3.28/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.01. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.7 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16295, The racial makeup of the county was 14019 White, 89 Black or African American, 1788 American Indian, 73 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, and 318 from two or more races.
