Ashe County is a county located in the United States of North Carolina. In 2000, county's population was 24384 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 25702, It is the 28th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Its area is just over 426.78 sq mi (1105.36 sq km), of which, 426.13 square miles (1103.67 sq km) of it is land and 0.65 square miles (1.68 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 63rd largest by total area in North Carolina.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 24384 residents, 10411 households, and 7422 families in the county. The population density was 57.2 people per square mile (22.09/kmē), making its North Carolina's 26th least densely populated county. There were 13268 housing units at an average density of 31.1 per square mile (12.01/kmē). The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.75. In the county Age distribution was 19.8% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 18% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.9 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 25702, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98% White, 0.93% Black or African American, 0.37% American Indian, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.47% from two or more races.
