Aroostook County is a county located in the United States of Maine. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 73938 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 71676, making it Maine's sixth largest county. The county comprises an area of 6828.79 sq mi (17686.48 kmē), of which, 6671.54 square miles (17279.21 kmē) of it is land and 157.25 square miles (407.28 kmē) of it is water, making it the largest by size in Maine. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

As of the census of 2000, there were 73938 people in the county, organized into 30356 households, and 20436 families residing in the county. The population density was 11.1 people per square mile (4.29/kmē), it is the second least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Maine. There were 38719 housing units at an average density of 5.8 per square mile (2.24/kmē). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.86 people. In the county Age distribution was 22.6% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 17% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 71676, The racial makeup of the county was 69034 White, 466 Black or African American, 1055 American Indian, 456 Asian, 21 Native Hawaiian, and 644 from two or more races.
