Armstrong County is one of the 254 county of Texas, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 2148 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 2123 in July 2008, It is the 20th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 913.81 sq mi (2366.76 sq km), of which, 913.63 square miles (2366.29 sq km) of it is land and 0.18 square miles (0.47 sq km) of it is water, it is the 140th largest by area in the U.S. state of Texas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2148 people, 802 households, and 613 families living in the county. The population density was 2.4 people per square mile (0.93/kmē), it is Texas's 27th least densely populated county. There were 920 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0.39/kmē). The average household size was 2.58 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 26% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 2123, The racial makeup of the county was 97.5% White, 0.8% Black or African American, 0.94% American Indian, 0% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.75% from two or more races.
