It covers total area of 25.96 sq mi (67.24 kmē), of which, 25.87 square miles (67 kmē) of it is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 kmē) of it is water, making it Virginia's 29th smallest county by total area.

The population density was 7323.3 people per square mile (2827.54/kmē), making it the second most densely populated county in Virginia. The population's age distribution was 16.5% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 42.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 or older.
