As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 209969, It is the ninth largest in terms of population. It covers total area of 25.96 sq mi (67.24 kmē), of which, 25.87 square miles (67 kmē) of it is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 kmē) of it is water, making it Virginia's 29th smallest county by total area.

The population density was 7323.3 people per square mile (2827.54/kmē), making it the second most densely populated county in Virginia. There were 90426 housing units at an average density of 3495.4 per square mile (1349.58/kmē). The average household size was 2.15 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. The population's age distribution was 16.5% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 42.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.7 males.
