Appanoose County is a one of the county from Iowa's 99 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 13721 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 12850, It is the 60th most populous county in the U.S. state of Iowa. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 516.35 mi˛ (1337.34 sq km), of which, 496.25 square miles (1285.28 sq km) of it is land and 20.1 square miles (52.06 sq km) of it is water, it is the 31st smallest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Iowa.

The population density was 27.6 people per square mile (10.66/km˛), it is Iowa's 53rd most densely populated county. There were 6697 housing units at an average density of 13.5 per square mile (5.21/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.89 persons. The population's age distribution was 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 20% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 12850, The racial makeup of the county was 97.76% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 0.22% American Indian, 0.51% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.86% from two or more races.
