Anne Arundel County is a United States county located in the United States of Maryland. The county has a population of 489656 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 512790, It is the fifth most populous county in the U.S. state of Maryland. The county has a total area of 587.9 sq mi (1522.65 square kilometre), of which, 415.94 square miles (1077.28 square kilometre) of it is land and 171.96 square miles (445.37 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the ninth largest by area in the U.S. state of Maryland. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Maryland.

As of the census of 2000, there were 489656 people in the county, organized into 178670 households, and 129193 families living in the county. The population density was 1177.2 people per square mile (454.52/kmē), it is Maryland's fifth most densely populated county. There were 186937 housing units at an average density of 449.4 per square mile (173.51/kmē). The average household size was 2.65 persons, and the average family size was 3.09 persons. In the Anne Arundel County, 25.2% of the population was under the age of 18, 8.1% were 18 to 24, 32.8% were 25 to 44, 23.9% were 45 to 64, and 10% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 512790, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 79.23% White, 15.43% Black or African American, 0.35% American Indian, 3.11% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1.79% from two or more races.
