Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 83038, making it the 42nd most populous county in Texas. It covers total area of 864.45 sq mi (2238.92 kmē), of which, 801.56 square miles (2076.03 kmē) of it is land and 62.89 square miles (162.88 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 66th smallest by total area in Texas.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27.7% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 83038, The racial makeup of the county was 82.99% White, 14.77% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 0.85% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.94% from two or more races.
