As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 7984, giving it the 48th largest population among Kansas's county. The county encompasses an area of 584.29 mi˛ (1513.3 square kilometre ), of which, 582.92 square miles (1509.76 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.38 square miles (3.57 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 19th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.
