The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 279243, It is most populous county in Alaska. The county comprises an area of 1961.09 miē (5079.2 kmē), of which, 1697.21 square miles (4395.75 kmē) of it is land and 263.88 square miles (683.45 kmē) of it is water, giving it the third smallest by total area among Alaska's county.

The population density was 153.4 people per square mile (59.23/kmē), it is Alaska's most densely populated county.
