Amsterdam City is a city located in the Montgomery County, New York, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 18355 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17533, It is New York's 96th largest by population . The city extends throughout a territory of 6.29 mi˛ (16.29 square kilometre ), of which, 5.95 square miles (15.41 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.34 square miles (0.88 square kilometre) of it is water, making it New York's 125th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18355 people in the city, organized into 7983 households, and 4689 families living in the city. The population density was 3086.5 people per square mile (1191.7/km˛), it is 261st most densely populated city in New York. The median age was 39.2 years, the median age of male residents at 37 and the median age of female residents at 41.6. The racial makeup of the city was 90.01% White, 2.17% Black or African American, 0.27% American Indian, 0.71% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 2.01% from two or more races and 4.79% Other races.
