Amsterdam City is a city located in the Montgomery County, New York, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 18355 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17533, It is New York's 96th largest by population . The city extends throughout a territory of 6.29 mi˛ (16.29 square kilometre ), of which, 5.95 square miles (15.41 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.34 square miles (0.88 square kilometre) of it is water, making it New York's 125th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18355 people in the city, organized into 7983 households, and 4689 families living in the city. The population density was 3086.5 people per square mile (1191.7/km˛), it is 261st most densely populated city in New York. There were 9277 housing units at an average density of 1559.2 per square mile (602.01/km˛). The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.93. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males. The median age was 39.2 years, the median age of male residents at 37 and the median age of female residents at 41.6. The racial makeup of the city was 90.01% White, 2.17% Black or African American, 0.27% American Indian, 0.71% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 2.01% from two or more races and 4.79% Other races.
