Amherst County is a county located in Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Amherst County is home to 31894 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 32539, giving it the 54th largest population among Virginia's county. It has total area of 478.78 square miles (1240.03 square kilometre), of which, 475.18 square miles (1230.71 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.6 square miles (9.32 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 31st largest by size in Virginia.

For every 100 females there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 32539, The racial makeup of the county was 78.27% White, 19.44% Black or African American, 0.84% American Indian, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.99% from two or more races.
