Amelia County is a county in the United States of Virginia. In 2000, the population was 11400. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 12808, It is the 31st smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. It has total area of 358.54 square miles (928.61 square kilometre), of which, 356.8 square miles (924.11 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.74 square miles (4.51 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 57th largest by total area in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 11400 people, 4240 households, and 3177 families residing in the county. The population density was 32 people per square mile (12.36/kmē), it is the 16th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 4609 housing units at an average density of 12.9 per square mile (4.98/kmē). The average household size was 2.66 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county Age distribution was 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 12808, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 9661 White, 2997 Black or African American, 35 American Indian, 24 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 89 from two or more races.
