Altus City is a one of the Jackson County, Oklahoma, located in Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. In 2000, city's population was 21447 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 18912, It is the 18th largest by population in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The city extends throughout a territory of 17.03 square miles (44.11 kmē ), of which, 16.83 square miles (43.59 kmē) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 60th largest by total area in Oklahoma.

As of the census of 2000, there were 21447 people in the city, organized into 7896 households, and 5627 families residing in the city. The population density was 1274.1 people per square mile (491.93/kmē), giving it the 101st most densely populated city among the Oklahoma. There were 9264 housing units at an average density of 550.4 per square mile (212.51/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.14 persons.
