Altoona City is a city located in Polk County, Iowa, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 10345. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 13854, It is the 32nd most populous in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is spread over 7.1 mi˛ (18.39 square kilometre), makes it the 44th largest by total area in Iowa.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10345 residents, 3850 households, and 2894 families in the city. The population density was 1456.2 people per square mile (562.24/km˛), it is 129th most densely populated city in Iowa. There were 3959 housing units at an average density of 557.6 per square mile (215.29/km˛). The average household size was 2.66 persons, and the average family size was 3.08 persons. The population's age distribution was 30.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 33.3% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.9 males. The median age was 32.2 years, The median age of males was 31.2 years, for females the median age was 33.2 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 95.91% White, 0.92% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 0.46% Asian, 0.41% Native Hawaiian, 1.2% from two or more races and 0.77% Other races.
