In July 2008, its estimated population was 29520, It is the 49th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Michigan. Its area is just over 1695 miē (4390.03 kmē), of which, 574.15 square miles (1487.04 kmē) of it is land and 1120.85 square miles (2902.99 kmē) of it is water, it is the 16th largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.
