Alpena County, Michigan is a county of the United States of Michigan. The population of the county was 31314 as per the 2000 census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 29520, It is the 49th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Michigan. Its area is just over 1695 miē (4390.03 kmē), of which, 574.15 square miles (1487.04 kmē) of it is land and 1120.85 square miles (2902.99 kmē) of it is water, it is the 16th largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.


As of the census of 2000, there were 31314 people in the county, organized into 12818 households, and 8694 families living in the county. The population density was 54.5 people per square mile (21.04/kmē), it is the 45th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 15289 housing units at an average density of 26.6 per square mile (10.27/kmē). The average household size was 2.4 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 or older.
