Alpena City is a city located in the Alpena County, Michigan, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 11304 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 10465 in July 2008, It is the 99th most populous in the U.S. state of Michigan. It has total area of 9.08 mi˛ (23.52 sq km), of which, 8.38 square miles (21.7 sq km) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.81 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 70th largest by total area in Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 11304 people, 4874 households, and 2866 families living in the city. The population density was 1348.9 people per square mile (520.81/km˛), it is Michigan's 255th most densely populated city. There were 5200 housing units at an average density of 620.5 per square mile (239.58/km˛). The average household size was 2.24 people, and the average family size was 2.93 people. Age range in the city was well distributed with 23% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males. The median age was 39.6 years, The median age of males was 37.1 years, for females the median age was 41.9 years. The racial makeup of the city was 97.66% White, 0.42% Black or African American, 0.43% American Indian, 0.48% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, 0.91% from two or more races and 0.09% Other races.
